Nonprofit Council Meeting
Thursday, June 10
9am - 10am
Location: County Landfill
Join Sustainability Matters and the Chamber at the Shenandoah County Landfill (yes, the landfill) to learn about Sustainability Matters' Making Trash Bloom project, geared at planting trash cells with bee and butterfly friendly native wildflower meadows. Come see it in bloom and learn about the project!
Breakfast, coffee, and juice will be provided, but please bring your own chair if you want one. Also, dress appropriately to be outside for 1 hour at the landfill; closed-toe shoes recommended!
The Shenandoah County Landfill is on Landfill Rd, off Rt 11 north of Edinburg. Drive over the bridge/scale into the landfill, then keep going straight. Take your second left and park off the road on the grass once you see the pilot plot (it will be obvious). For those familiar with the landfill, it's on the road leading to the recycling barn.
Background:
When landfills seal a 5-acre trash cell, that land can never be built on, used to grow crops, or planted with trees. Landfills currently seed trash cells with turfgrass, which has no environmental value. Sustainability Matters has partnered with the Shen Co landfill to plant pollinator and wildlife habitat instead. The pilot plot/demonstration garden was planted 18 months ago, and became something of a pandemic destination last year.
