Shenandoah University Athletics issued the following announcement on Jan. 5
The Shenandoah University women's basketball team earned its third straight victory Wednesday evening with a 77-43 ODAC win at Virginia Wesleyan.
Shenandoah (7-3, 2-3 ODAC) dominated from start to finish versus the Marlins (3-9, 0-5).
IN BRIEF
The Hornets opened up a 15-8 lead after one and took a 20-point (39-19) lead into the halftime locker room thanks to a 24-point second quarter.
The third quarter brought more of the same as Melissa Smeltzer-Kraft's club outscored VWU 23-13 in that stanza to increase its lead to 31 points (62-31).
SU then coasted home by scoring 15 points in the fourth.
A 7-0 run midway through the first gave the Hornets the lead for good.
Olivia Weinel led the victors with 20 points with Ragan Johnson adding 13 points and eight rebounds. Eleven different women scored at least one point in the game for Shenandoah.
The Hornets shot 45 percent (33-of-73) and had a 58-35 edge on the boards. SU scored 22 second chance points and 23 points off of 16 Marlins turnovers.
QUOTABLE
"We have been focusing on very specific things in practice and that showed tonight," Smeltzer-Kraft said. "We played as a unit on offense and defense and set the tone."
UP NEXT
With Saturday's scheduled home game versus Lynchburg postponed until Jan. 31, the Hornets return to the court on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. ODAC contest at Randolph.
