VMI Closes Out Regular Season at Home with Wofford

93

The VMI baseball team closes out the 2022 regular season at home this weekend with conference-leading Wofford College in Gray-Minor Stadium. The Southern Conference series is slated to begin Thursday at 6 p.m. with contests also scheduled for Friday at 2 p.m. and Saturday at 1 p.m.

The program's senior class of Adam Jewell, Justin Nase, Will Knight, Nathan Light, Will Lopez Reeves Whitmore and Jacob Mustain will be honored before Saturday's finale.

Both teams are looking to finish the regular-season strong before play begins next Wednesday at the 2022 Southern Conference Tournament presented by Holston Gasses in Greenville, S.C. at Flour Field. The Terriers need just one win in Lexington to clinch the #1 seed entering the eight-team tournament, while VMI is now sitting in the #7 spot, but could move slightly depending on the weekend's results. With one victory over Wofford, the Keydets can lock in the #7 seed.

The Keydets took the first game 10-9 in a Southern Conference series at Mercer University last weekend, but the Bears won the last two, including the finale 8-7 in 13 innings.

Red-shirt sophomore Zac Morris had a huge series at Mercer, hitting .538 with three home runs and a double in the three games for a slugging percentage of 1.308. He also drew three walks for an on base percentage of .588 and scored six runs and drove in six.

Wofford is 37-14-1 overall and 13-4-1 in Southern Conference play. The Terriers split the first two games of a three-game series at home with Western Carolina University last weekend, but the third game ended in a 2-2 tie after severe weather forced play to be called in the seventh inning.

VMI sits at 16-36 overall and 6-12 in league contests.
