Keydets Fall to UNC Asheville on the Road

VMI women's soccer traveled to UNC Asheville Sunday for its second road match of the season, scoring late but falling by a score of 4-1.

Sophomore Sedona Dancu put VMI on the scoreboard in the 76th minute (75:17) with her first career goal following a cross from freshman Caroline Marini and shot it into the lower left corner of the net.

The Keydets had several other scoring opportunities come up just short, including a Morgan Anderson shot midway through the first half that bounced off the right post. Moments later, Anissa Cheikh headed a free kick toward the Asheville net that required a save from the Bulldog keeper. Freshman Katy Layman also had a shot early in the second period that required a save by UNCA's Bronwyn Luitweiler.

Game Summary

  • Asheville's Taylor Gardner put the Bulldogs on the board first at the 38:26 mark of the first half with a goal off an assist from Kaiya Boyd
  • UNCA's Daysha Chaney scored the game-winning goal at the 43:45 mark off a cross from Gardner with a shot to the upper left corner. She added an insurance goal two minutes into the second half with a goal a score at the 46:19 mark.
  • Brooklyn Scythes scored the final goal of the match for the Bulldogs with just under 20 minutes left in regulation
VMI Head Coach Chris Haught-Thompson Postgame Commentary

"First off, I have to give hats off to Asheville. They did a great job and certainly took their chances. It was a weird game for us. I actually thought we played quite well and unfortunately the score didn't end up reflecting our effort. Sometimes those games are hard to process, but I certainly think there are great building blocks with a very young team despite the result."
