With much anticipation for the upcoming track and field season, VMI Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Zack Scott announced the program's 2022-23 schedule Wednesday afternoon.
Indoor Season
For the first time in years, the Keydets will begin the indoor campaign before Christmas Furlough by hosting the VMI Team Challenge at the Corps Physical Training Facility on Saturday, December 3. The meet is typically held in mid-January of each new calendar year.
The VMI Invitational will instead take that weekend of January 13-14, followed by the VMI Winter Classic two weeks later from January 27-28. The first multis of the season will be contested at the VMI Winter Relays February 3-4 before the Keydets compete at the Darius Dixon Invitational hosted by Liberty University February 11 in Lynchburg, Virginia.
"We are fortunate to have a state-of-the-art indoor facility that houses one of the best indoor tracks in the United States," Scott said. "We will have four home meets that will provide great competition from the state of Virginia and includes collegiate teams from the northern and southeast regions of the United States. We'll also compete at the Liberty meet for one away event to help us prep for the Southern Conference Championship."
For a sixth consecutive year, VMI will host the SoCon Indoor Championships at the CPTF the weekend of February 25-26.
The NCAA Indoor Championships are set for March 11-12 at the CrossPlex in Birmingham, Alabama.
Outdoor Season
VMI opens the outdoor season in mid-March with the Alan Connie Shamrock Invitational hosted by Coastal Carolina in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina March 17-18.
Prior to the SoCon Outdoor Championships will be hosted by Western Carolina (dates TBD), the Keydets will compete at events hosted by High Point (Mar.31-Apr. 1), South Carolina (Apr. 15), James Madison (Apr. 15) and Virginia (Apr. 21-22).
"Changing gears indoor to outdoor this year, we will be spending our spring break training in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, capping off our training competing at Coastal Carolina," Scott said. "We continue most of our season in the Carolinas, but with two meets in Virginia before the SoCon Outdoor Championships at Western Carolina."
The NCAA Southeast Regional is slated for May 24-27 in Jacksonville, Florida, and the NCAA Outdoor Championships will be contested June 7-10 in Austin, Texas.
