Family Connections: Barker, Jaecksch, Winston, Polhamus
We like to think of Valley Health as one large family, and nothing personifies that more than when family members work together in our health system. Let’s meet Nicole and Steven Barker and their family. This group enjoys quick chats, eating lunch together and carpooling.
Nicole Barker: Supervisor in Nutrition Services at Winchester Medical Center
Steven Barker: Floor Crew of EVS at Winchester Medical Center
Sarah Jaecksch: Teacher’s Assistant for the Child Care Center
James Winston: Housekeeping/Floor Crew – EVS
William Polhamus: Floor Tech/EVS
Nicole
What do you like about working with/near your family? We are all on different shifts, so it’s nice to see them at work for lunch or just a few minutes to chat.
Why did you choose Valley Health? I was a single mom at the time looking for job security and the ability to advance. Within my first year, I went from per diem hospitality associate to full-time supervisor in my department.
Steven
What do you like about working with/near your family? I like to see my family at work. My wife helps me communicate with coworkers and supervisors. (Steven is deaf and only communicates through ASL.)
Why did you choose Valley Health? A counselor from vocational rehab in Martinsburg helped me apply at Valley Health.
Sarah
What do you like about working with/near your family? I love working with my family because I can carpool with my fiancé, have lunch with my mom, and I know they’re close if I need them.
Why did you choose Valley Health? I chose Valley Health because of the amazing opportunity to work for the Child Care Center and the ability to see my family more often.
James
What do you like about working with/near your family? I love being able to see so much of my family every day and being able to commute to work with my fiancé.
Why did you choose Valley Health? My family already worked here and I wanted to be close to them every day, as well as Valley Health’s pay is competitive.
William
What do you like about working with/near your family? I like how when we don’t see each other outside of work much, we can go and see each other during breaks.
Why did you choose Valley Health? I chose VHS because it was recommended to me by a family member, and working at a hospital is a stable job.
