The Effect of Psychosocial Factors on Pain and Function

Could Psychosocial Factors be Impacting Your Chronic Pain and Function?

Ask a Physical or Occupational Therapist for Help!

Have you ever noticed that your chronic pain is much worse when your stress levels are high? Do you find yourself avoiding specific activities because you are fearful it will make your pain worse? This is not uncommon.

There are multiple factors that can influence your pain levels and functional ability. These may include psychosocial factors such as mental health, job and family stressors, a history of multiple injuries, lack of social support, fear avoidance of movement, and poor coping skills for stress or pain. According to research, psychosocial factors can indirectly increase pain levels and cause a decrease in function.

With proper management, many of these impacts can be reduced. Physical and Occupational Therapists are uniquely suited to help you assess and manage some of these issues using techniques including mindfulness, relaxation, stress coping skills, graded exposure, and pain neuroscience education. They can also refer patients to a mental health specialist if indicated. Speak to a Physical or Occupational Therapist about how they might assist.
