Woods, Houser Named to SoCon All-Freshman Teams
After a tremendous season on the hardwood, VMI freshmen Asher Woods and Tyler Houser were named to the Southern Conference All-Freshman teams as recognized by the SoCon coaches and SoCon Sports Media Association.
Woods was given the honor by both the coaches and the media, while Houser received the recognition through the media poll. The full listing of the Southern Conference First, Second and Third Teams as well as the All-Freshman and superlative honorees is found below.
A native of Newnan, Georgia, Asher Woods currently ranks third among all players in the league in minutes played with 35.3 per outing. A stellar free throw shooter, he ranks ninth in the league in free throw percentage making over 80 percent of attempts at the charity stripe (.804). The only Keydet to start all 31 games this season, Woods leads the team with 14.1 points per game and scored a season-high 22 points in the home opener against Penn State New Kensington on Nov. 10. He ranks fifth on the team in rebounds at 4.6 per contest and grabbed a season-high 11 boards versus Mercer on Jan. 19. He logged seven games with 20+ points and totaled 23 contests in double figures scoring.
Houser ranks third on the team in points per game averaging 10.9 for the Keydets during his freshman year, including a season-high 26 points versus Western Carolina in the regular season finale. The center from Camp Hill, Pennsylvania, ranks second on the team in rebounds at 5.1 per outing and grabbed a season-high 12 boards at The Citadel on February 2. Not only strong in the paint, Houser proved his range by converting 41 three-point attempts on the season (.353). He was also effective at the free-throw line by making 42 of 58 attempts on the year for a .724 average and led the team in blocks with 14 on the season. Houser picked up his first career double-double against Samford on February 18.
The Keydets open the 2023 SoCon Basketball Tournament Friday night as the No. 10 seed facing No. 7 Chattanooga at 7:30 p.m. at Harrah's Cherokee Center in Asheville, North Carolina.
VMI Head Coach Andrew Wilson
"I'm very happy for Asher & Tyler for being recognized by the Southern Conference for their contributions on the court. They both had outstanding freshman seasons and are going to be terrific players for years to come in this league. More importantly, they are young men of high character and make everyone associated with our basketball program and VMI proud."
