In the opening quarter of 2026, Village at Orchard Ridge ranked as the third largest nursing home by bed count in Frederick County, according to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).
The facility reported 20 available beds, which is 24 fewer than the county’s average as of the first quarter of 2026. It served an average daily population of 19 residents during that timeframe.
The CMS gave Village at Orchard Ridge a 5 out of 5 overall rating, outperforming the Virginia nursing home average of 3.
In this period, Winchester Health & Rehabilitation was the county’s largest nursing home, offering 60 beds. Shenandoah Valley Westminster Canterbury followed in second with 51 available beds.
Village at Orchard Ridge maintained a record with no fines or penalties as of the first quarter of 2026.
There were two non-profit nursing homes operating in Frederick County, Virginia, at that time.
According to U.S. Census Bureau estimates, the country’s older population is rising as the number of children continues to decrease. From 2020 to 2024, Americans 65 and older increased by 13%, while the population under 18 dropped by 1.7%. Over the past century, the population aged 65 and up expanded significantly from 4.9 million in 1920 to more than 61 million by 2024.
A 2021 study indicates that close to half of older adults—a group of around 28 million people—may require long-term services and supports. That research also suggests more than one third could ultimately need care in a nursing facility.
“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
