VMI rally falls just short, Radford hangs on for 9-8 win
The VMI baseball team nearly rallied to defeat Radford University Friday, but the Highlanders hung on for a 9-8 victory at Sherman Carter Memorial Stadium.
Radford led 9-6 but VMI plated one run in the seventh. The Keydets pushed another run across in the top of the ninth and loaded the bases with two outs, but Radford got out of the jam with a groundout.
The Highlanders led early 6-0, but a Keydet six-run fourth fueled by a triple and four doubles tied the game.
Highlights:
*Ty Swaim went 3-5 with a double, a triple and scored twice
*Brett Cook had two hits with a double, drew a walk and had three RBI
*Trey Morgan had two hits, a double, two walks and two stolen bases
*Grayson Fitzwater had a two-run double and Justin Starke also doubled
*Cole Garrett walked twice
*Hunter Sipe tossed three scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and no walks with three strikeouts
*Zack Whitacre went 3-5 with a home run and three RBI for Radford
Next Time:
VMI hosts Radford Saturday in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. in Gray-Minor Stadium. The first game is scheduled for seven innings and the second for nine, with approximately a half hour between contests.
